Novak Djokovic beat Holger Rooney 7-6 (4) 6-7 (1) 6-3 in a match that lasted more than three hours to secure his eighth consecutive year-end No. 1 spot.

The 36-year-old Serb recovered from a disappointing 2022 season to win three of his four Grand Slam titles in 2023 and finish runner-up behind Carlos Alcaraz at the Wimbledon Open.

Djokovic tops year-end rankings for eighth time

Djokovic has now sat as world number one for 400 weeks, more than any other player in history. He will also have a chance to break his tie with Roger Federer at next week’s ATP Finals to win the title for a record seventh time.

“It’s always been an ambitious goal of mine,” Djokovic said, “to become world No. 1.” Apart from the Grand Slams, it’s the most important thing. To finish the year as world No. 1 at this stage of my life and career is amazing.

Djokovic has won 19 straight matches since his five-set defeat to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final in July. He is now the favorite to win the ATP Finals and complete a perfect season.
