Outgoing All Blacks head coach Ian Foster has said he would be willing to coach another international team, including the Wallabies, after being linked with the vacant position.

Foster had led New Zealand to the Rugby World Cup final in France, but eventually lost 12-11 to South Africa. That ended his rollercoaster tenure and Crusaders championship coach Scott Robertson now takes over the team.

Australian Rugby chief executive Phil Waugh has said he will consider hiring a foreigner to replace Eddie Jones and Foster has confirmed that he has not ruled out applying for the role.

“I don’t want to talk about my future right now,” Foster said in an interview with Newstalk ZB.” I just want to say that I haven’t talked to anybody about anything.”

“I’ve done that on purpose. I had a few options before the World Cup and I said ‘if you want to talk to me, you have to wait until after the World Cup’. Because I didn’t want this team or this country to think that I was too busy adjusting myself before the biggest tournament. I want people to know that I’m 100 percent focused on the team and I think everyone can see that.

“Now I want to take my time and think about what to do next. The timing isn’t perfect because a lot of work has disappeared. That’s OK, I’m willing to take the risk.”

Foster was asked if he wanted to coach at the “highest level.”

“It’s one of the options,” Foster said.

“There are a couple of things – you’ve got the European club thing, you’ve got the Japanese thing, and the international game.

It’s very difficult to talk about coaching another country when you’ve just spent 12 years with the best team in the world and so close to my heart,” Foster said.

“Frankly, I just need to catch my breath before I go down that road.”

Foster’s candidacy could divide opinion, with some Wallaby fans eager to see the Australian appointed to the position. However, his experience and success with the All Blacks makes him a strong contender.

It remains to be seen whether Foster will indeed apply for the Kangaroos position and whether he will be able to secure it.
